A 110-litre fuel tank and 500Nm of diesel torque. The Prado is the vehicle people hire when the trip goes past where the sealed road ends — or past where the next roadhouse is.
Overview
The Prado has been the default Australian touring vehicle for thirty years, and the 250 Series is the most capable version yet. For Western Australia specifically, two numbers matter more than anything on the spec sheet. The first is the fuel tank: 110 litres, in a dual-tank setup, at a claimed 7.6L/100km. That's over a thousand kilometres of theoretical range. On the drive north, where roadhouses can sit two hundred kilometres or more apart and one being closed is a real possibility, that range is not a convenience — it's the margin that makes the trip sensible. The second is 500Nm of torque from a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, through an eight-speed automatic with low-range gearing and full-time four-wheel drive. Loaded with people, gear and a trailer, it doesn't labour. Braked towing is rated at 3,500kg, which covers most caravans and camper trailers. Ground clearance is 210mm and the platform is significantly stiffer than the previous generation, which shows in how settled it is on corrugations and how stable it feels towing. In GXL specification you also get the comfortable version of all this: leatherette upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, three-zone climate control, wireless charging and a powered tailgate. It's a genuine long-distance vehicle rather than a stripped-out workhorse. About unsealed roads. Unlike the rest of our fleet, this vehicle is built for them — but permission is not automatic and depends on where you're going. Tell us your route before you book. We'll confirm in writing what's covered, what the tyre and damage terms are, and what to do if something goes wrong a long way from help. Turning up and hoping is how people end up with a bill they didn't expect. Best for: outback and regional touring, towing a caravan or camper, long WA drives where fuel range matters, station and mine access work, families who want capability and comfort together.
