There's a reason the HiLux has been Australia's benchmark ute for years, and it isn't marketing. The SR sits in the working half of the range — no leather, no sunroof, just the mechanical package that does the job. Power comes from a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel producing 150kW, with an 80-litre fuel tank. That tank size matters more in WA than almost anywhere else in the country: roadhouses on the northern and eastern highways can sit hundreds of kilometres apart, and 80 litres of diesel buys you genuine range between fills. The double cab seats five with four proper doors, so a crew of four plus tools travels in one vehicle instead of two. Braked towing runs to 3,200–3,500kg depending on the model year, with 750kg unbraked, and ground clearance sits at 216mm. It's rated 5 stars by ANCAP, and part-time 4x4 with low range is standard on this variant. At 5,325mm long and 1,855mm wide it's a big vehicle. Fine on site and on the highway, less fun in a Northbridge car park — and worth checking clearance before any underground parking in the CBD. One thing to be clear about: a 4x4 badge does not automatically mean you're permitted to drive off-road or on unsealed roads under our rental agreement. Travel conditions and area-of-use limits still apply, and driving outside them can void your damage cover.
