The HiAce Commuter is the default twelve-seater in Australia, holding the large majority of the light bus segment, and the reason is simple: it does the job without needing a special licence or a professional driver. The engine is a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel with a six-speed automatic. It's built to carry a full load rather than to be quick, and it's comfortable at highway speed with twelve aboard. Diesel economy matters more than usual here — moving twelve people in one vehicle uses far less fuel in total than running three cars to the same place, which is often the real reason groups book one. Seating is twelve including the driver, and here's the practical part: with all twelve seats occupied, there is very little luggage space left. The rear seats can usually be removed or reconfigured to create room, so if you're collecting a group from the airport with bags, tell us when you book and we'll set it up accordingly. Twelve people plus twelve suitcases is not a configuration that exists — it's one or the other, or a mix. The other thing to plan around is height. At over 2.2 metres it won't clear the barriers on most shopping centre, CBD or hotel underground car parks, which are typically set at 2.0 or 2.1 metres. Open-air parking, street parking and most airport surface car parks are fine. Check before you commit to a venue. It's a long vehicle with a big turning circle, so allow room. It's rear-wheel drive and sealed roads only under the rental agreement.
