The Koleos is the car you hire when the trip matters more than the vehicle. A family holiday down to Dunsborough. Two couples heading to the Swan Valley. A week of driving between meetings, hotels and the airport. It does all of it without asking anything of you. Space is the strong point. Five adults fit properly, rear legroom is generous for a mid-size SUV, and the boot holds 493 litres with all seats up — comfortably four suitcases, or a pram and a week's shopping. Fold the rear seats and it opens out past 1,700 litres, which covers a market run, a bike, or a small furniture move. The 2.5-litre petrol engine produces 126kW and 226Nm through a CVT automatic, and it's tuned for smoothness rather than pace. It runs on regular 91 unleaded, which keeps the fuel bill down on a longer hire, and returns a claimed 8.1L/100km. The 60-litre tank means fewer stops on the run south. What people notice most is the ride. Renault set it up soft, and on Perth's mix of freeway and patched suburban roads that pays off. Long drives are genuinely comfortable, and the cabin stays quiet at highway speed. Practical notes. It's an easy car to drive and park for something this size, with light steering and a reversing camera. If the fleet vehicle is the all-wheel-drive version, that's for wet-road traction only — it isn't an off-road SUV, and unsealed roads are excluded under the rental agreement. Best for: family holidays and road trips south, groups of four or five with luggage, business travel with comfort, visitors touring the South West, anyone who wants an SUV without the size of a seven-seater. Not ideal for: six or more passengers, unsealed roads, towing anything substantial, tight inner-city parking.
