The Wrangler is the last mainstream vehicle that still puts capability ahead of everything else, and that's exactly why people hire one. Power comes from Jeep's 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 producing 209kW and 347Nm through an eight-speed automatic, driving a dual-range four-wheel drive system with genuine low-range gearing. It reaches 100km/h in about 7.9 seconds, which is beside the point — what matters is that low range and 232 to 242mm of clearance let it go places the rest of our fleet cannot. It runs on 91 regular unleaded from an 81-litre tank at a claimed 9.7L/100km, giving a theoretical range over 800km. That's thirstier than the Prado, and the fuel bill on a long trip is noticeably higher. Worth budgeting for. Being straight about the trade-offs, because a Wrangler rewards knowing them in advance. It rides firmly and it's noisier at highway speed than any other vehicle we hire. The tall body and short wheelbase mean it moves around more in crosswinds and needs a smoother hand than a normal SUV. The boot is modest for a vehicle this size. And it carries a three-star ANCAP rating from its 2019 assessment with four airbags. None of that is a criticism — it's the price of a vehicle built around live axles and a separate chassis. People who want a Wrangler want a Wrangler, and nothing else does what it does.
