The MU-X is a seven-seat wagon built on the same underpinnings as Isuzu's D-Max ute, and that shows in the best way: it's simple, durable and unbothered by hard use. It's also one of the most affordable genuine seven-seaters you can hire. The engine is a four-cylinder turbo-diesel, and economy from around 6.4L/100km is the practical benefit — on a family trip to Margaret River or Kalbarri, that's a noticeable saving against a petrol SUV of this size. Diesel torque also means it doesn't struggle when it's fully loaded with seven people and their gear. Seating is a 2-3-2 layout. The second row splits 60/40 and reclines; the third row splits 50/50 and folds flat when you don't need it. Row three is best suited to children or shorter trips for adults, which is normal for this class. Be aware of the boot situation before you book, because it catches people out. With all seven seats in use the cargo area holds 311 litres — about a small hatchback's boot. Fold the third row and it opens to 1,119 litres, which is generous for five.
