This is the tray version, not a tub — and that's the whole reason to pick it. A flat deck with drop sides loads from three directions, takes a pallet without fighting wheel arches, and carries awkward gear a styleside ute simply won't swallow.
Overview
Most dual cab utes on hire lots are stylesides — a tub with wheel arches poking into the load space and only one way in. The crew cab chassis with a tray is a different tool. The deck is flat and full width, the sides drop for loading from either flank or the rear, and a forklift or a pair of hands can get at the load from wherever it's easiest. The mechanical package is Isuzu's 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel producing 140kW and 450Nm, driving through a six-speed automatic. Isuzu quotes a combined figure of 8.0L/100km. It's honest rather than exciting — the D-MAX has built its reputation on the engine being straightforward and durable, which is precisely what you want in a hire ute that's going to be worked hard. Payload is where the tray version needs a word of explanation. A bare crew cab chassis has a high payload rating, but fitting a tray uses part of it up, and a heavier tray uses more. A typical alloy-tray D-MAX crew cab lands somewhere around the 900kg mark once the tray and a driver are accounted for. Ask us for the exact figure on the vehicle you're hiring rather than working off the brochure number — overloading a ute is both a fine and a safety problem. Off the bitumen, all 4x4 D-MAX models get Rough Terrain Mode and a rear differential lock as standard, with 235mm of ground clearance. It's rated five stars by ANCAP. Towing is quoted at up to 3,500kg braked, but there's a condition attached: that rating applies when a genuine tow bar kit and an electronic brake controller are fitted. Confirm what's on the vehicle before you plan around a heavy trailer.
