The engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. xDrive sends torque where it's needed, which is worth having on a wet Perth winter morning and entirely invisible the rest of the time. It's smooth, quiet at freeway speed, and has enough in reserve for a loaded overtake. Practically it does everything a family or a business traveller needs. Five adults fit properly, rear legroom is generous, and the boot takes a family's luggage with room left — around 550 litres, expanding past 1,600 with the rear seats folded. The load floor is flat and the opening is wide, which matters more in daily use than the raw number. Inside it's a proper premium cabin with digital instrumentation, a large central screen and wireless smartphone connection. Over a fortnight's hire it stays comfortable, which is more than can be said for some cars in this class. It's an on-road all-wheel-drive system rather than an off-road one, running road tyres on large wheels. Sealed roads only, as across the fleet.
