Large seven-seat SUVs exist because families outgrow five seats but don't want a van. The Q7 has been one of the best of them for two decades, and the current car is the most refined version yet. All variants drive all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic with quattro all-wheel drive. Depending on the engine it reaches 100km/h somewhere between six and seven and a half seconds, which is more than adequate for a vehicle of this size. What matters more on a long drive is refinement: it's quiet, it rides well, and it doesn't tire anyone out over three hours. The third row is a genuine one rather than an emergency measure — adults will sit there for a trip across town or down the coast without complaint. That's not true of every seven-seat SUV, and it's the main reason to choose one at this end of the market. Now the honest part, and it's worth reading before you book. With all seven seats in use, the boot holds about 295 litres — roughly what a small hatchback offers. Seven people and seven suitcases will not fit. Fold the third row and it opens to 780 litres, which is generous for five. So the Q7 suits a group that occasionally needs seven seats, not one that always travels seven-up with full luggage.
