Overview
Mid-size premium SUVs sell in enormous numbers for a straightforward reason: they do nearly everything well enough that you stop thinking about the car. The Q5 has been one of the best of them for fifteen years. The engine is a 2.0-litre turbo with mild-hybrid assistance, paired to a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch. It's not fast — around 8.6 seconds to 100km/h on the petrol — but it's smooth, quiet and completely unbothered at highway speed, which is what actually matters on the run to Bunbury. The number worth noticing is fuel use: roughly 5.7L/100km, which for a quattro SUV of this size is genuinely impressive and less than half what the SQ8 in our fleet drinks. Space is where it earns a family booking. The boot holds 520 litres with the seats up and 1,520 with them folded, and the rear bench slides and reclines — so you can trade legroom for boot space depending on whether you're carrying people or luggage that week. Very few SUVs in this class offer that. Inside is standard Audi: a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, leather upholstery and heated front seats even on the base car. It's a comfortable place to spend a working week or a fortnight's holiday. quattro all-wheel drive comes on most variants, and it's genuinely useful on a wet Perth winter morning. It is not, however, an off-road system — the Q5 runs road tyres and low-profile rubber on larger wheels, and unsealed roads are excluded under the rental agreement, same as the rest of the fleet.
