The A3 fills a gap most hire fleets leave open. Between the cheapest hatchback on the lot and a large prestige SUV there's very little, and plenty of people want exactly what sits in the middle: a small, economical car that doesn't feel cheap. The engine is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, producing 110kW and 250Nm through Audi's S tronic dual-clutch automatic. It reaches 100km/h in 8.1 seconds — brisk enough, and more relevant, it's smooth and quiet in the sort of driving a hire car actually does. Claimed combined consumption is 5.3L/100km, and with a 50-litre tank the theoretical range is well over 900km. Perth to Albany and back on one tank, in other words. Inside is where the money went. A 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three-zone climate control, heated front seats and a powered driver's seat. For a business traveller living out of a car for a week, those things matter more than power figures. The boot holds 380 litres with the rear seats up — two large cases plus a laptop bag — expanding past 1,200 litres with the 40/20/40 rear seat folded. There's a space-saver spare underneath rather than a repair kit, which is worth knowing for regional drives. Practically, it's a small car. It parks in the CBD and Subiaco without drama, it's easy in traffic, and it's cheap to run for something that presents this well. Sealed roads only, as with the rest of our fleet. Best for: business travel and client meetings, couples and solo travellers, longer hires where comfort and fuel use both matter, anyone who wants a premium car without a prestige-tier bond, visitors who'd rather not drive a base-model hatchback for a fortnight.
